Energy balance

Energy balance refers generally to the sum of the energy consumed in the production and processing of a product.

Simple mining and very low transportation costs make the natural expanded silicate an energy efficient way to the refining process. This in turn requires less energy because what would have been an energy intensive operation, the "expansion" was already done by nature thousands of years ago. Therefore, cleaning, drying and sieving are sufficient to produce valuable lightweight aggregates from natural expanded silicate.
